Back to back IIC titles for the Austrian driver.

 

Team CRC team driver Hupo Hönigl rolled into Las Vegas as the defending International Indoor Championship (IIC) in the 1:12th scale modified division. At last year’s 2008 event, Hupo and teammate Jilles Groskamp sat on the front row with their CRC Gen-X cars. Hupo went on to win the A-main from the T.Q. position.

For 2009, there were a few changes at the IIC. First off, all the pan car classes would all use the new 3.7 volt lipo packs. Secondly, the importance and emphasis of the IIC would shift from touring cars to the now very popular 1:12th cars. With all the top teams fielding the very best drivers including the reigning World Champion, 1:12th scale modified at the IIC could be called the ”World Championships” on carpet. Another change for 2009, CRC would debut the new Generation-XL (3202) chassis specifically built for lipo racing. One thing that did not change was CRC’s domination of 1:12th scale racing.

In 1:12th scale modified, Hupo took his very STOCK CRC Gen-XL to a convincing win in the A-final. Hupo absolutely ran away with the win setting fast lap and running a string of laps that no other competitor could match. In fact, Hupo’s average top 20 fast laps were faster than any other driver’s single fastest lap. Think about that, 20 laps quicker than any other single fastest lap. Domination defined.

Hupo’s Gen-XL car was very stock using the stock plastic left side bulkhead, plastic standoffs and standard servo mounting position. No voodoo, no funny stuff. With the grip high and the speed of the modified 1:12th division, the only option parts Hupo chose were the CRC front suspension brace (3277) and the long upper A-arm (3348). The tire choice was CRC Pro Cut Magenta front (2172) and Pink rears (2175). The new Encore shock (3290) worked perfectly and did not require any rebuilding nor maintenance.

Hupo also used the Black Art R8C body. Last season, this body won the 2008 World Championships, 2008 Cleveland Indoor Champs, 2009 Euros, 2009 Snowbirds and the 2009 ROAR National championships. This season, new bodies have surfaced in an attempt to stop the dominance of the Black Art R8C (4167). The R8C won the 17.5 and Modified classes at the IIC establishing itself as the body to have in 1:12th scale racing, no matter what the power plant is.

took his new Gen-XL to a T.Q. and win in the 17.5 turn 1:12th scale class. In stock trim, ’s Gen-XL was very fast and smooth, taking T.Q. by almost 1 full lap. In the main, while drove away from the field, a good battle ensued for second. In the end, CRC Michigan Mafia driver Jody Flipse took second with his Gen-XL. Both drivers used CRC Pro Cut tires and the Black Art R8C body.

Also new for the 2009 IIC, and Jody used the new Advance Electronics Brushless speed control. Back in March of 2008, used the brushed unit from Advanced to win the ROAR Nationals. Since then, the engineers at Advanced have been perfecting their new brushless unit and the result is ASTONISHING. The Advanced unit finished 1-2 in 17.5 and 1-2-3 in 13.5 turn 1:12th scale. The Advanced unit also was T.Q in Expert World GT.

 

 

The Advanced will be available with full heat sink and

fan and a low profile unit for 1 cell 3.7 volt lipo racing.

 

The new Black Diamond speed control from Advanced is incredibly well designed and specifically built with 1s and 2s lipo use in mind, although it has 5 and 6 cell NimH modes as well. Every speed control on the market that allows 2s lipo or 6 cell NimH cells has a voltage regulator in it. The speed control regulates the 7.2 or 7.4 volts from the race pack down to the 6 volts that servos are designed to use. When designing the unit for 3.7 volt 1s lipo use, engineers at Advanced knew that many racers would be using a small 7.4 volt 2 cell lipo to power the radio gear. Rather than forcing the user to add a second regulator to their small 1:12th car, the Advanced unit allows the user to connect the 7.4 lipo direct to the regulator in the speed control eliminating the need for a separate regulator. Very smart, why carry 2 regulators? Very clever and very well designed.

Defending a product that is perfectly legal….

Of course, with the speed of the Advanced powered CRC cars in Las Vegas, many have speculated that we were somehow using the 7.4 volts from the receiver pack to power the car. This is incredibly silly. The receiver pack we used was a 180 mah Losi Micro pack (LOSB0862) with tiny 24 or 26 gauge wires. To think we were taking power from the receiver pack is simply ridiculous. Also, at 180 mah, how long would the small receiver pack last? We were able to run two 8 minute races on one charge of the receiver pack meaning we were using less than 90 mah per 8 minutes of racing.  The Advanced powered CRC cars were fast on the first lap and the last.

Some have also speculated that running the receiver pack straight into the speed control is somehow allowing the controller to use the 7.4 volts? What is the difference of running the receiver pack into the receiver and then the receiver sends the 7.4 volts to the speedo? The receiver is nothing more than a junction box for the 7.4 volts. The same small wires that are used on the receiver pack carry the same voltage whether direct to the speed control or detoured through the receiver. It is the same voltage carried by the same thin wires sourced by the same small 180 mah lipo battery. The smart design of the Advanced speed control allows the user to SAVE money (no regulator needed) and save space in the chassis.

The power of the Advanced unit is the result of a better engineering meeting up with the finest components. It is the first unit designed for 3.7v 1s lipo batteries. The timing profiles match actual use.  No cheating. No funny stuff. Quality, engineering and hard work that results in a better product. The racing public has 2 choices, whine like a baby claiming the Advanced unit is cheating or get one a experience the power of the finest speed control on the market. 

Look for the Advanced unit to be available from CRC sometime in November 2009.

13.5 Turn 1:12th Scale Division

CRC routs the field taking the top four positions.

The 13.5 class is a common ground for the top modified drivers and the fast stock drivers to meet. At the 2009 IIC, this class had an incredible amount of driver talent with World Championship A-main drivers in the field. Taking the Top Qualifying position was last year’s 17.5 turn Top Qualifier, Pete D’Agnolo. Chasing Pete closely in qualifying were CRC teammates and Frank Calandra. In fact, each of these drivers held the T.Q. position at one point during qualifying. All three drivers used the new CRC Gen-XL car and the new Advanced Electronics speed control.

 

1 thru 4 is all CRC in the 13.5 class. Gen-XL Sweeps the top!

 In the A-main, it was a CRC sweep with D’Agnolo, Wynn, Calandra and Hönigl finishing 1-2-3-4. A great result for the new car and a strong result for the Black Art body and CRC Pro Cut tires. With Hupo’s 4th place finish, he won the”non-Advanced” speed control division.

 

Manufactures Cup

With wins in 1:12th scale 17.5, 13.5 and Modified, the new Generation-XL 1:12th car from CRC won every 1:12th scale class at the IIC. This accomplishment earned CRC the Constructers Championship for the 2009 International Indoor Champs.

’s Advanced Powered CRC Gen-X 10 was untouchable!

 

Last year, CRC won the World GT class at the IIC. This year, we again dominated the event but got a bit unlucky to let the A-main slip away. How did we dominate? took his CRC Gen-X 10 to the Top Qualifying position winning ALL four rounds of qualifying. That’s domination. also set overall fast lap in qualifying with a 9.7 second lap time clearing the next quickest car by .2 sec. More domination. also lead the most laps in the A-main, leading 24 of the 29 laps. Unfortunately for , this main was not to be. Hupo Hönigl’s CRC Gen-X 10 set the fastest lap in the main in a strong second place finish. At one point in the A-main, Hupo got by his rival for the lead, but the Austrian driver felt his pass was a bit rough and waited. So, while it was disappointing to let the A-main slip away, with winning all four rounds of qualifying and CRC cars setting fast lap times, the Gen-X 10 continues to lead the way in performance an features in the hot World GT division.

Meet and Greet

Scotty again had the popular Meet and Greet session for some of the manufactures to set up display tables. With CRC cars lighting up the practice speed charts, the CRC booth was a popular spot. On display was the new CRC Gen-XL as well as the Black Art R8C body.  We even had our Battle Axe oval car on display for the crowd.

Race Summary

Scotty Ernst and the IIC crew did a great job on the race. The track was very smooth and with the CRC Fasttrak carpet, the grip was great. The management crew did a great job keeping the race on schedule and the show went along very smoothly. With the rocket speed of the CRC cars, the IIC tech crew was very thorough on the CRC cars in tech. They were under pressure to insure that we were legal. At times, our cars and transmitters were in tech and closely scrutinized by Jamie Tennies, the lead tech man. Our motors were disassembled, checked and tested. We hope the controversy surrounding the speed of our cars does not take away from a great event.  CRC would like to thank the IIC management team, all the racers for making the event a success, our dedicated team members; Jody Flipse, Mario “Roscoe” Ficco Train, Art Scrimo, Nash, for the Super Glue and Syndrome for the use of the laptop while you weren’t there and didn’t know it, all who worked hard helping the team.
