The
2007 Snowbird Nationals was again an extremely popular race with approximately
800 racers attending the event. Both road and oval drivers were greeted with a
great racing surface featuring CRC’s Fasttrak Racing Carpet. The oval was smooth
and fast, the road course was a great challenge with low and high speed corners.
Heading into 2007, CRC cars had won the 1/12 A-main for 4 straight years. Four years of dominating the Snowbirds! For 2007, CRC brought the latest weapon to the event, the Carpet Knife Generation X #3200. The Generation X featuring the most adjustable front end in the industry, CRC’s Pro Strut front end.? Could the Generation X with the new CRC Pro Strut front end make it 5 in a row?
In qualifying, CRC driver and 3-time Snowbirds Champion Mark Smyka would pilot his new Generation X to the pole position, taking Top Qualifying honors. Right behind Smyka was Generation X drivers Paul Ciccarello, Jeff Cuffs and Tom Firsching. That’s right, qualifying 1 through 4 was Team CRC drivers. It looked real good for 5 heading into the A-main.

In the A-main, a great battle
between all 4 Gen X pilots with Smyka, Cuffs, Ciccarello and Firsching leading
at different points in the 8 minute main event. With 50 seconds to go, the
battle was for the lead with Firsching leading Smyka. Firsching was very
aggressive for the main, pushing the gear ratio on his car to the max, while he
was fast up front, that big gear made him a bit soft on the straight later in
the race. Lucky for Tom, his Gen X was carrying great corner speed, so the tall
gearing was not a big issue. On the other hand was Smyka, his car was still very
quick at the end. Trailing the 2 leaders was a charging Paul Ciccarello.?
Late in the race, Mark pressured Tom hard for the lead but Tom responded staying
on line and clean to take the victory with a great drive. With Smyka’s Gen X 2nd
and Ciccarello’s Gen X in 3rd, it was an all CRC podium and CRC’s 5th win in a
row. Five years of dominance. Tom’s Gen X
was
raced in basically stock trim. Only springs and damping fluids were changed from
the kit setup. No special parts. Tom’s car featured CRC Pro Cut racing tires on
the dominant and popular and often copied but never duplicated, HR-38 “High
Roller” rim.

In 1/12th modified, Marc Fischer
used those precious CRC Pro Cut tires to destroy the modified field. Fischer
used CRC Magenta front
#2172 and Magenta rear
#2176 Pro Cuts to T.Q. and win the prestigious modified
field. Also found on Fischer’s car was a plethora of CRC items, from the red CRC
Durashock
#4281 to the entire line of CRC front end parts (4287,
4275,
4265). Fischer was the only car in the A-mod main using Pro Cuts and the
dominance of the wheel and rubber design showed.
?
CRC had a number of top drivers on hand to to pilot the new Gen X car. Mike Blackstock, Jilles Groskamp and Bobby Flack were all in the hunt for the win with their CRC Generation X machines. A solid 3-car A-main performance for the new CRC Generation X.

On the oval, Steve Pemberton was back to defend his 1/12th 19 turn title with his CRC Razor II #1700. Pemberton also used CRC’s lightweight Charger 1/12th body #4163 and Pro Cut racing tires. Joining Steve in the A-main was road race expert Mark Smyka. Mark “experiments” on the oval occasionally. He built his new box-stock CRC Razor II 1/12th oval racer and went to the Snowbirds with zero time on the car. The Razor II is one of the most affordable oval kits on the market. Smyka took this box stock car to a podium finish with very little practice.
