The Snowbirds 2009 edition is now history. Another excellent event put on by Mike Boylan, Kenny Holmes (scarecrow) and the fine Snowbirds race management crew. Again this year, as in 2008, the Birds race track was all CRC… our new Clik Trak race barrier system and CRC’s newest Fasttrak HD Racing Carpet (Heavy Duty, not high definition).
The hard working Snowbirds crew at the Birds really enjoy the “quick change” track layouts with CRC’s Clik Trak system. Clik Trak makes the task of going from oval to road and back again much easier. Just press some buttons and pull apart the sections. As you can see from the pictures, challenging road courses and ovals are a “clik” away.
A special thanks to the Snowbirds crew for putting up a super smooth racing surface to put the carpet and barriers on. This excellent surface is the base of a good track and it allowed the carpet and barriers to be presented in the best possible light. A great track greeted the competitors.
Racing Action
Road
Calandra Racing Concepts had a good group of racers representing the Gen-X line of cars and Pro Cut tires.
In 12th scale 17.5, Frank Jr. qualified second and finished on the podium with his CRC Gen-X 12th car. Joining Frank in the A-main were CRC drivers Mark Smyka (4th), (6th) and Canada’s JB Catricala (9th) for a dominant 40% of A-main.

In 10.5 12th scale , CRC again had a solid performance with Smyka, Wynn and Calandra again placing in the A-final. Joining them was early round T.Q., Jeff Dayger. Jeff put his CRC ride 3rd on the grid.
In the World GT Class, after winning Las Vegas and Cleveland, CRC rolled into the Birds with a hopes of sweep of the World GT major races. Frank Jr. and Wynn put their Gen-X 10’s in position for the A main win, however, unfortunately could not pull off the win with a red-hot Blackstock taking the A-main.

Oval
In the Oval ranks, CRC had it’s new 1:10th Oval car, the Battle Axe 2.0 in the hands of quite a few racers. Entered was 2005 Snowbirds Champion, Steve Pemberton, Steve Downs, Joel Winnicki with road racers , Mark Smyka, Mario Ficco and Frank Calandra joining in on a little oval fun.

Joel Winnicki takes his brand new CRC Battle Axe 2.0 to a T.Q. and A-main win.
The was Joel’s first time out with the car. he won every round and the A-main convincingly.
Congrats Joel! Look for the Battle Axe 2.0 to be available in late March. |

Joel’s Battle Axe V2.0 1:10th oval car. Please don’t adjust your monitor, yes, that is a link car.
Much like the way they have dominated the 1:12th road course world, look for link
cars to invade the oval scene. Complete with CRC’s Pro Strut Front end and Durashocks and link rear end.
Also, the car features a foam nerf wing. |
In 1:12th scale 13.5 , CRC’s took T.Q. honors with his CRC Razor 1/12th oval car. also used CRC Pro Cut tires. A great result from the first time oval racer at the Birds.

took his CRC Razor to the 1:12th 13.5 Oval Top Qualifying Position.
used 3 CRC Pro Cut Pink tires and a Purple right front. A very pink
(and ugly) CRC lightweight Monte Carlo oval body was used as well. |

was leading early in the until he was hit by a Zamboni
driving straight across the ice. The crash took away
any chance for an A-main podium. |
Joining in the A-main was Winnicki (3rd), Pemberton (5th) and just missing the final was Mario Ficco.. a.k.a. – Sheriff Roscoe-“Ficco”-Train. (Roscoe P. Coltrane). While the Sheriff just missed the A-main, he did a double podium of the concours event, taking 1st and 3rd.
In Pro Modified oval action, Frank Calandra took his Battle Axe 2.0 to a 5th place position in the A-main. In this highly competitive division with all the top oval drivers in attendance, this was a solid result for the “new car” on the block. Before the event, this particular chassis had ZERO laps of testing, proving the new Battle Axe V2.0 is a solid oval platform based on CRC’s race winning Gen-X 10 road car. The car was quickly tuned into a stable yet solid performer in the high speed world of 7.4 V Lipo and 10.5 brushless motors.
Look for the new Battle Axe sometime in mid-to-late March.

While the weather was not typical Florida, the event was again a pleasure to attend. Great track, smooth sub floor, mixing oval and road racers under one roof. Looking forward to next year.
